Why Do Migraine Headaches Happen?
The causes can be quite varied, and they are not always known. It appears that women may be more likely to develop migraines than men, with some studies showing that women are twice as likely as men to develop migraines. Vascular changes that result in the widening of arteries may be one of the causes of migraines. There are also theories that suggest changes in the brain’s nerve cells may contribute to migraines.
What Are Migraine Triggers?
While the true cause of migraines is not necessarily certain, some patients are able to identify migraine triggers. Triggers are not necessarily the cause (or at least the sole cause) of a migraine but they do appear to play a role in some patients. In some people, certain foods trigger migraines. Common culprits are cheese, wine, and chocolates. For other people, things like weather changes, poor sleep and drinking alcohol may trigger migraines. Even if the cause of the migraines cannot be definitively determined, effective chiropractic treatment is available today.
How Do Migraines Differ From Regular Headaches?
While headaches can range from mildly uncomfortable to quite painful, migraines are almost always both intense and throbbing in nature. Migraines often occur on only one side of the head, while headaches are frequently all over the head. Migraines may also be different from regular headaches in that they sometimes have a type of warning system called an “aura.” Around 20 minutes to an hour prior to a migraine, some people experience a nervous system disturbance (the aura). This disturbance may be either visual or olfactory (smell) in nature, and when it happens, there is a high probability that a migraine is coming.
How Can Chiropractic Care Help With Migraines?
The chiropractor will correct any nerve, muscle or bone issue that may be causing the migraines through chiropractic adjustment. In some cases, single misaligned spinal vertebrae can cause serious nerve interference that leads to chronic migraines. Sometimes, serious tension or irritation in the spine causes the migraines. Once the spine is correctly aligned, the patient will typically find relief.
